One thing I’m very passionate about is skincare. I have struggled with skin issues in the past which has left me with a love for skincare. Throughout my skincare journey there are three things very important things I have learned that I am here to share today! I could honestly probably share a bunch of these tips, but three is a good starting point. Let me know if you want to hear more, I’d love to share!
**While reading this, please keep in mind: even though I do consider myself fairly knowledgeable in the skincare department, I am far from an expert!**
1. Never sleep in your makeup! / Wash your face at night!
I know sometimes at night you’re super pooped and the last thing you want to do is get up and go wash you face. But trust me, Its the easiest way to keep your skin in good shape. While you’re sleeping is when your skin natural renews its self. Sleeping in face makeup is almost like “suffocating” your skin. Wearing makeup up is fun; trust me I love it just as much as the next girl. But sleeping with a layer of foundation and thick primer on your skin can clog pores, causing acne. Sure, sleeping in your makeup one night won’t kill you. But the build up over time will cause the formation of something called a mircocomedone, which attracts acne causing bacteria to the pores. So basically the start of acne. Also, it can break down collagen in the skin causing premature aging. Through out the day your skin, not only on your face, collects debris such as pollen and anything else in the air. When you don’t properly clean your skin at night you are causing an unnecessary exposure to free radicals, which in turn breaks down the collegian in your skin.
First of all, this is important regardless of what skin type you have! So many people think simply because their skin is oily and does not feel dry that they don’t need to moisturize. Well unless you want dull looking skin moisturize! Moisturizing helps skin to function at it very best. Moisturized skin can repair itself faster and turnover fresh new cells in no time. Which means your skin will look fresh and plump in return. And for my oily friends out there, not moisturizing will only cause more oil production. Washing your face can strip the skin of its natural oils. Then not moisturizing afterwards, causes skin to bump up its sebum (oil) production in order to makeup for the oils lost. When you moisturize you are satisfying your skins need for oil, causing less oiliness (oil production). And on top of all of that, it has great anti aging benefits down the road!
3. Don’t over exfoliate!
Although exfoliating often can be tempting because of how soft and smooth it makes your skin feel and look, It’s actually a bad idea! Figuring out how often to exfoliate takes a little bit of trial and error considering everyone has different skin types. I personally physically exfoliate (a scrub or cleansing brush) my skin once a week. I do also chemically exfloiate (products containing glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, etc) every couple of days. This can vary on your skin type. For example, someone with more sensitive/dry skin may want to exfoliate less then someone with a normal/oily skin type. Over exfoliation can cause noticeable dryness, dullness and dehydration of the skin. Also, increased sensitivity, irritation, and even breakouts. So find what your skin can handle and you’ll be as good as gold.
