First things first, lets set the scene. I’m a full-time college student working a minimum wage job with a wish list (or should I say need list) full of the latest trends. Do you see the problem? One thing I love about blogging and reading blogs is the inspiration that comes along with it; especially the outfit inspiration. Just on Instagram alone I see so many adorable outfits and fashion pieces that I just need to have. But when it comes along with a price tag in the triple digits, it’s not something I can realistically get my hands on.
In today’s post I’m sharing my tips for staying on trend while also keeping a budget in mind, or for short, fashion on a budget. While these tips aren’t ground breaking, they can (and will) be super helpful! Especially for all the not so rich students out there like me.
Shop in The Right Stores
It might seem fairly obvious not to shop at Chanel when your on a budget, but that’s not exactly what I mean. After all, we are not just looking for deals, we’re looking for cute pieces as well. I’m talking stores that consistently have low prices, not just stores with sales. Some of my all time favorite places to find pieces that are always at a great price are: Target, Marshalls, Tjmaxx, and Primark. The only down fall here is that you have to work (and sometimes dig, literally) a little harder for the cute pieces. But I promise they’re there, so don’t give up. No one ever said fashion on a budget was easy!
Re-purpose Old Pieces
This is my favorite of all four tips. Start digging in your closet (again with the digging) and find some old pieces. You can either bring them back, or totally transform them to be what you’re looking for. For example, give an old pair of jeans a new distressed look. Or even cut the sleeves or bottom hem off of an old t-shirt. With creativity the options are honestly endless. For example, the top I have on in these photos is actually a dress I tied up into a cute tank. Not only does this give you a chance to be creative, it’s also free! And it also gives you an excuse to keep all of the old clothes you’re struggling to part with.
If you see your friend rocking a totally cute piece, just ask to borrow it! I feel like so many people never really think borrow something, or are just too afraid to ask. I mean the worst that can happen is that they say no. And then you can just resort to one of the other three tips!
This is the most obvious, but I still thought it was worth sharing. When you fall in love with a pieces, try to wait it out. I’m sure it will be there in a month AND at a reduced price. Also, when you see a sale pop up, take advantage! I’m a total sucker for sales, as you’ve probably noticed. I feel like whenever I’m raving about a piece it’s partly just for the amazing price. But is that really a bad thing?
